Hofstra Law's Gitenstein Institute for Health Law and Policy and the Hofstra Bioethics Center present

Kidney to Share: A Donor and an Ethicist Discuss Living Organ Donation

Wednesday, October 13 | 12:30-1:30 p.m. ET | Held via Zoom

Join us on for a provocative discussion on the legal, ethical and personal issues involved in living organ donation.

Author Martha Gershun and physician-bioethicist John D. Lantos will discuss their new book, Kidney to Share, in which Gershun tells the story of her experience donating a kidney to a stranger, while Lantos places Gershun’s story in the larger context of the history and the ethical controversies of living organ donation. Together, they provide a fascinating insight into organ donation that is both personal and analytical, highlighting the discoveries that made transplantation relatively safe and effective, while exploring the legal, ethical, and economic policies that make it feasible.

This event is free, open to the public, and will be held via Zoom.

RSVP is required.

Martha Gershun is the former Executive Director of Jackson County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). She is author of Care & Custody, and her work has appeared in The Kansas City Star, The New York Times Magazine, Kveller, and The Radcliffe Quarterly.

John D. Lantos, MD, is Director of the Bioethics Center at Children's Mercy Hospital and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Medicine. His books include Do We Still Need Doctors, Neonatal Bioethics, and Controversial Bodies. He is Associate Editor of American Journal of Bioethics, Perspectives in Biology and Medicine, and Current Problems in Pediatrics and Adolescent Health Care.
