Health Law at Hofstra: Being Prepared for the COVID World

This webinar offers a sample of the work in which our health law faculty is now engaged.

Professor Janet Dolgin will focus on the conflict between public health measures such as mandated quarantine, isolation, or vaccination and the individual’s right to liberty.

Professor Adam Kahn will discuss issues and challenges with hospital discharges and ongoing care in the COVID world, including insurance for undocumented individuals, nursing home subsidy agreements, and patients without capacity to make decisions.

Professor Ronald Colombo will provide an overview of Hofstra Law’s online health law programs for LLM and MA students.

 

This event is free, open to the public, and will be held via Zoom.

Janet L. Dolgin
Jack and Freda Dicker Distinguished Professor of Health Care Law; Professor of Science Education, Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine; Co-director, Hofstra Bioethics Center; Director, Gitenstein Institute for Health Law and Policy

Professor Dolgin and her colleagues at the Gitenstein Institute and the Hofstra Bioethics Center have implemented many public policy and legal service projects. These include projects aimed at (1) educating community members about advance care planning (a project implemented and operated with partners at the Northwell Health System); (2) providing legal and social services to local veterans, many of whom do not receive the benefits to which they are entitled as veterans; (3) responding to the social determinants of health and health-harming legal needs through a Medical-Legal Partnership between the law school and the Northwell Health System; and (4) offering interdisciplinary training to law and medical students as well as practicing professionals in clinical bioethics.

Adam D. Kahn
Adjunct Professor, and Associate, LaSalle, La Salle & Dwyer, P.C.

Adam Kahn is an adjunct professor of law at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University and a senior fellow with the Gitenstein Institute for Health Law and Policy at Hofstra University. As a senior fellow, Mr. Kahn teaches a discussion seminar for students interested in health law and assists with planning and implementing various other programs, including programs concerning elder abuse and the institute’s Conversations: Health and Treatment (CHAT) project, which focuses on educating members of the community about health care decision-making issues.

As an attorney, Mr. Kahn holds an associate attorney position with LaSalle, La Salle & Dwyer, P.C., where his practice focuses on guardianships, advance care planning, discharge planning, and other elder law and health law matters.

Ronald J. Colombo
Professor of Law and Associate Dean for Distance Education

Professor Colombo teaches courses in corporate, securities and contract law at Hofstra University’s Maurice A. Deane School of Law, and serves as associate dean for distance education (overseeing the law school’s online degree programs). His scholarship has focused largely on issues of securities fraud, corporate law and financial regulation, and has done so via the application of natural law theory, economic theory, moral philosophy and neuroscience. More recently, his scholarship has addressed the constitutional rights of business entities. In 2014 he authored a book on the subject, titled The First Amendment and the Business Corporation, published by Oxford University Press.

Before joining the Hofstra faculty in 2006, Professor Colombo served in the Complex Global Litigation Group of Morgan Stanley & Co., Inc., as vice president and counsel.
