Viewing the Rights of Sexual Assault Victims Through a Restorative Lens

Lara Bazelon
Author and Professor of Law, University of San Francisco School of Law

Tuesday, October 22 | noon-1 p.m. | Sidney R. Siben and Walter Siben Moot Courtroom

Room 308 Hofstra Law School, South Campus

Professor Lara Bazelon will discuss how the criminal adjudicatory process harms victims of sexual violence as well as how the victims’ rights movement has tried to address those harms by reforming the existing system to keep victims informed and to allow them an opportunity to be heard at sentencing and seek monetary restitution. She will explore how the victims’ rights movement, while propelling forward important reforms regarding the trial and sentencing process, has failed to accommodate victims who would prefer, and be better served by, a non-adversarial process through which they can achieve a different objective - namely, restorative justice.
