The Max Schmertz Distinguished Professorship, established in 1982, honors and perpetuates the memory of Max Schmertz, a business and political leader of the city of New Rochelle. It is funded by grants from the late Eric J. Schmertz, former Dean of the Hofstra School of Law, and Herbert Schmertz, vice president, Mobil Corporation. It supports a Distinguished Lecture Series in various legal disciplines.

Andrew Schepard is a 1972 graduate of Harvard Law School, where he served as articles editor of the Harvard Law Review, and served as a law clerk to then-Chief Judge James L. Oakes of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

Professor Schepard is the editor of the Family Court Review and the author of Children, Courts and Custody: Interdisciplinary Models for Divorcing Families (Cambridge University Press 2004). He has written many law review articles in family law and alternative dispute resolution, and writes the “Law and Children” column for the New York Law Journal.

Professor Schepard is the director of the Center for Children, Families and the Law at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law and the founder of Hofstra Law’s Child and Family Advocacy Fellowship program, which awards fulltuition scholarships and paid internships to students pledged to a career in the field. He is also a founder of Parent Education and Custody Effectiveness (P.E.A.C.E.), an education program for divorcing and separating parents on how to responsibly manage their conflicts over their children.
